April 2024 Flash Fiction Winner: Adoration

Mystical Creature
By A.C. Perri

The brochure promised a modern bus with air-conditioning; this one was neither. Mother sat on her own, senility the culprit. I watched as she gasped for air as though it were her last. I wished it had been. The rest of her was drenched in sweat patches where one least expected. She seemed oblivious, until her eyes found the lady with the lion’s body. Though usually unresponsive, something transpired, as when I gifted her the pendant depicting the same mystical creature.

Mother’s adoration for such tokens was priceless, well worth selling one of my kidneys for.

A.C. Perri lives in the southern hemisphere where she has been writing free-style poetry and pieces of fiction described as 'delightfully unconventional' and 'over-the-top' creative works for many years. She has won awards for her work in local writing competitions having had a few published in Indie magazines. Perri’s most endearing quality is her persistence.
