Young Person Writing - Words of a Feather - Creative Writing Workshops

At Words of a Feather…

… we write together.

Originally known as Creative Write-it, WOAF emerged in 2011 from a desire to provide a space for young writers to be inspired, engaged, and mentored by professional writers with the skills and passion to share.

Since late 2023, we have grown into a studio for writers of all ages, at all stages of their writing journey. We provide workshops, creative events, mentoring, and exciting opportunities to be published. We all have stories to share, and more to learn. We are forever curious. We are not afraid to dig deeply, listen intently, explore further, and take the time to celebrate how far we have come.

At WOAF, we believe in creative writing as a tool for self-discovery, expression, connection, imagination, and joy. In a world that is increasingly systemised and outcome-driven, creative writing is a sanctuary where we are free and encouraged to think for ourselves, find the power in our own voices, and have fun just for the sake of it.

We look forward to welcoming you, writers!

Hi, I’m Amy.

I’m a writer and the founder of Words of a Feather. I have been leading creative writing workshops and mentoring emerging writers since 2011. I’ve been writing and imagining stories for as long as I can remember.

I believe with my whole heart that creativity has an important role to play in this ever-changing world, and in our individual lives. Creative thinking, the ability to express ourselves, and the skill to imagine what it’s like to be someone else, will get us far, and imbue our lives with deeper meaning - no matter how we choose to spend it. My mission is to create space for that. My vision is for creative writing to be accessible and integral for as many people as possible who are open to it; for writing and storytelling to be as normalised as waking up each morning.

Stories connect us to ourselves, each other, our past, and our future. Plus, creative writing is fun! If you’re looking for a place to explore writing and develop the stories you have inside you, I’d love to support you in making that happen.

Meet more of the literary humans behind Words of a Feather:

  • Livia is the Coordinator & Lead Mentor at our sister studio across the globe, WOAF Romania.

She had a taste of the graphic arts in high school and a sip of humanities (BA in Philosophy) until she finally found her passion: creative writing. She recently received her MFA in Creative Writing, and for a year she was part of the Parisian literary community.

She mostly writes magical realism short stories and creative non-fiction, with occasional bursts of poetry. At the moment, she’s drafting her first novel.

Her prose and poetry have been published in Romanian and English literary magazines in print and online.

In addition to writing, she is passionate about Japanese pop culture and confesses that she could listen to Miley Cyrus sing endlessly.

  • Julie is the Coordinator, and one of our mentors, here at Words of a Feather (Melbourne). She is like the friendly person you’ll hear from when you contact us!

She has a BA (Professional and Creative Writing) and is currently completing a Bachelor of Psychology (Honours).

She has worked as an editor, copywriter and journalist, and her writing has been published by WORDLY, SOCIETY19 and the ABC. In 2022, Julie was awarded a Wheeler Centre Hot Desk Fellowship and a place at Varuna - The National Writers’ House to support her in completing her novels.

In her spare time, Julie can be found getting lost in a book or working on a young adult novel draft that always involves a curious protagonist and a sprinkle of romance.

  • Vicki writes fiction and non-fiction, with work published in the UK and Australia. Her young adult historical fiction novel, People of the Hammer, won a Varuna Publishers' Fellowship Award and she is now writing the second novel in the trilogy.

Vicki has a Diploma of Arts (Professional Writing and Editing) and a Bachelor of Arts (Psychology and English Literature). She is currently completing a Masters of Arts in Creative Writing.

She has been involved with WOAF since 2016, most notably as a beloved mentor for many years. Vicki continues to support our events and projects, as a contributor, editor, competition judge, and workshop facilitator.

  • Eliz is one of our mentors here at WOAF. She has been writing and creating characters since she first came across the adventures of Peter Pan and Harry Potter as a child. She is currently completing a Masters of Arts in Writing and Literature with a specialisation in Children’s Literature.

Her works have been published in WORDLY and the national Australian Genealogist magazines. In 2019, she completed an internship with US organisation ‘Girl Museum’, where she wrote articles based on empowering women in the Arts. Eliz is currently drafting her first novel that infuses old-world and fantasy literature.

  • Susannah is also one of our mentors at WOAF. She has a lifelong fascination with words and stories. She has been creating both original fiction and fanfiction since childhood, when she would fill notebooks with observations about those around her, in a practice inspired by Harriet the Spy.

She has a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in Linguistics and a Master of Information Studies in Children's Librarianship, and has worked with children in community settings for more than seven years. Susannah was a NaNoWriMo (National Novel Writing Month) winner in 2021 and 2022, and is still seldom seen without her writing notebook.
