The Cheeky Chameleon

By Emily Louey-Pan

Once, in the Amazon, a cheeky chameleon was camouflaging into a vine as usual. Now Charlie was a chameleon who had no friends but was very, very cheeky.

Charlie said to himself, “I’m gonna find a good friend!”

Charlie left his Amazon home and set off for the journey of the century - a journey that he would never forget! He gathered all his needs. As Charlie departed, he shouted, “Bye Armadillo, Koala, Camel, Owl, Dog, and Rhino!”

But nobody answered because nobody in the Amazon was called Armadillo, Koala, Camel, Owl, Dog, and Rhino.

Soon Charlie stopped by a creek for a drink of water because he was feeling dehydrated.

It was going to get dark soon so Charlie needed to find shelter immediately. He ventured into a small rock cave just big enough for him to set up his blanket and have some space for all his needs. It was dark now so Charlie lit his candle and placed it next to him so it would keep him warm. He felt his eyes start to close and he drifted off to sleep.

When Charlie woke up, he found a pen in his hands. He started drawing a plane.  Poof! One chameleon-sized plane popped out of the ground.

“Cool!” Charlie said and he thought of something better. He started to draw a beautiful place with lots of chameleons just like him. But this time the place didn’t pop out of the ground. Instead, he teleported to that place because there was already a large, beautiful place full of chameleons!

When Charlie arrived, he couldn’t see anyone and he felt like they had all left. He felt so sad like a dog getting scratched by 300 cats. But then Charlie started to hear whispering and he saw blinking eyes.

All of the other 1,000,000,000,000 other chameleons came to welcome him to his true home with lots of other chameleons and lots of new friends! He was the happiest Charlie the Chameleon in the entire world. That’s because he’s the only one, but don’t tell him that, okay?
