Force. Resist. Yield. Rise. Silence. Dissent. Endure. Claim.
Power comes with as many nuances as there are shades between dark and light. It is not inherently good or bad — but who holds it, and how, matters enormously.
In every choice, there is power. Every day, we choose between kindness and violence, between words and arms, between education and ignorance, acceptance and discrimination.
We are living through times that demand we ask hard questions: about freedom and who gets to claim it, about accountability and who it lands on, about justice and what it actually looks like — in a society, a life, a room, a body, a moment.
But power is not only what is done to us. It is also what we do, and what we discover within us. A voice that finds itself. A boundary drawn. A story told at last.
We want true and imagined stories. Of power used to protect the places and people we love. Of things stolen and reclaimed. Of rebellion and prevention. Of how power actually manifests — does it arrive as a shout, or something softer? Is there power in vulnerability, in dreaming, in simply showing up for yourself?
Bring us the full spectrum — power wielded and power surrendered, power that crushes and power that liberates, power found in the most unlikely of places.
We’re looking for bold new writing for our upcoming anthology, published December 2026.
We welcome: short stories, flash fiction, poetry, memoir, creative non-fiction.
Word limits: Prose up to 2000 words. Poetry up to 20 lines.

Submissions are open to all 2026 participants in Words of a Feather (Australia or Romania) workshops and events. This includes:
Creative writing workshops
Story Soirées
Flash Fiction competition
and other 2026 events/workshops

This anthology is a collection of writings by participants aged 16+.

All writings should be previously unpublished. Authors retain full copyright of their own work.
Word Limits:
Short stories, Creative Non-Fiction, Memoir: up to 2000 words
Poetry: up to 20 lines per poem; up to 3 poems
Formatting:
Please include your full name, city, and a short bio (less than 50 words) in your document.

Editing:
Please edit your writing to the best of your ability before submitting (spelling, grammar, punctuation, etc.). We are a small team creating this book mostly out of love! If your writing requires significant editing we will return it to you for editing, or we will have to leave it out.
We will not accept any writings that do not meet the above guidelines, or which include content we deem harmful to our community and the greater public.

Founded by local author Amy Han, Words of a Feather is a studio for writers of all ages, based in Melbourne and for writers all over the world. We have been supporting emerging writers and storytellers since 2011.
