What lands are waiting to be mapped by your imagination? What happens when unlikely companions are thrown together on a dangerous path — what strange new magic sparks between them? What secret ingredient changes everything? And what happens inside a person when they are tested, and discover they were capable of more than they ever knew?

We're seeking imaginative new writings from young authors for our 2026 Writ-Bits anthology — a collection brimming with adventure and alchemy. Since 2015, we’ve celebrated the incredible creativity of the young writers who take part in our programs, and we can't wait to see what you conjure this year.

Whether your story ventures into uncharted lands, brews potions and casts spells, explores the chemistry that crackles when the right (or wrong!) characters collide, or follows a character through their own alchemy of becoming who they really are — we want to read it.

Short stories, poetry, and creative writing of all kinds are welcome from writers aged 7–15 who have participated in any Words of a Feather workshop, program, or initiative in 2026. Illustrations and comics are also welcome (please see guidelines below).

The adventure begins with your words. We can't wait to find out where you'll take us!

  • Submissions are open to all 2026 participants in Words of a Feather workshops, programs, and competitions. This includes:

    • The Storytellers’ Club

    • Writing Mentorships

    • School Programs

    • Story Camps (school holidays)

    If you would like to contribute but you have not yet attended a WOAF workshop, it's not too late to see what's on!

    This anthology is a collection of writings by participants aged 7 - 15.

    Please make sure you have read the guidelines carefully before submitting your work. Thank you!

  • All creative work should be previously unpublished. By submitting to this anthology, you grant Words of a Feather permission to publish your writing. Writers retain full copyright of their own work.

    All submissions should be related to the theme ‘Adventure & Alchemy’ (this is open to interpretation!). It is ok if your piece relates only to ‘adventure’ OR ‘alchemy’.

    Language:

    All stories must be written in English.They can include some words in other languages - including made-up languages!

    Word Limit:

    Short stories: up to 1500 words. There is no minimum length.

    Poetry: up to 20 lines per poem. You can submit up to 2 poems.

    Comics: up to 20 panels. These must be in black and white line drawings on blank paper (we cannot print colour, sadly!) and designed to fit on a page that is 5 × 8 inches (max 5 pages).

    Illustrations: up to 2 illustrations. These must be in black and white line drawings on blank paper (we cannot print colour, sadly!) and designed to fit on a page that is 5 × 8 inches.

    You can submit illustrations in addition to a piece of writing/comic.

    Formatting:

    • Please include your full name, and your parent/guardian’s name and email in your document.

    • Times, 12pt

    • .doc or .docx file

    Editing:

    • Please read and edit your story carefully before submitting. We want you to be sure you are submitting your story in the best form you can. We also want to read it in the way you want it to be read!

    • It’s a good idea to also have an adult check your work - even grown-up, professional writers need fresh eyes to pick up on spelling, punctuation, and grammar mistakes! This is good practice for all future writing you send out into the world :)
